Start Date - 21/09/2018|
Time - 1:00 pm - 1:45 pm
1st and 3rd Fridays 1-1.45pm
Who are these sessions for?
These sessions are for any children studying maths at key stage 2 level, and particularly for home educating families who would like a little something extra to add to their home curriculum:
Think you are “no good at maths”, but want your child to be different?
Maybe you have taught the basics, but not sure where to go next?
Is your child struggling to engage in traditional sit down worksheet learning?
Does your child learn better in active learning, with the freedom to move and handle objects?
Learning Outside the Classroom (ie outdoors) adds significant value to a child’s education, promoting confidence, problem solving skills and co-operation. It has a positive impact on mental health , and many children with SEN will thrive in an outdoor environment. A recent study* has shown significant improvement to children’s numeracy skills.
What will the sessions cover?
The sessions will initially cover concepts from the Key Stage 2 level of the National Curriculum. We will use the outdoor environment to engage the children in interactive, multi-sensory learning. For example: how many lines of symmetry does a sycamore leaf have? How long is a stick, rounded to the nearest centimetre?
The sessions will give the children a spring board to actively engage in maths, and parents are asked to participate so that they can gain ideas and support the learning between sessions.
Who is leading the sessions?
Our sessions are being delivered by a qualified primary school teacher, who has had personal experience in home education, and assisted by a parent volunteer who is a mathematics graduate and member of Institute of Outdoor Learning.
Where are the sessions?
The sessions will take place in Moss Bank Park. The meeting point will be emailed out to all attendees before the first session. In case of bad weather, we will put up a tarp, but please dress appropriately for the elements.
These sessions are not intended to cover the entire curriculum, but rather an introduction to ideas which families can continue during home learning. The sessions will be based on topics taken from the Key Stage 2 National Curriculum syllabus, usually covered in primary years 4-6. Please use your discretion when deciding whether this level is suitable for your child or not.
For those interested, we are also running Shakespeare in the Park session following on after this one for children of all ages.
Member’s Price: £4/session per participating child
Non-Member’s Price: £5/session per participating child
When booking, please state your child(ren)’s name and age. Please note you must be logged in to access the member’s price.
*A recent study by Education Scotland showed over a period of working outside for 12 weeks, children gained on average 6 months of Mental Arithmetic and 2 months of General Maths against a similar cohort of children within control schools.
